MLB Fantasy Update- Breakout Season - 5/8/08

We're heading into our second week of May and some players are just screaming for some attention in our fantasy leagues. "PICK ME UP OR MAKE A TRADE FOR ME BECAUSE I'M HAVING A BREAK OUT YEAR BABY!"

1. Matt Kemp RF - Dodgers
AVG - .328 | HR - 3 | RBI - 25 | Runs - 19 | SB - 9
Matt Kemp has been on fire these past 2 weeks and is showing no signs of slowing down. He's hitting for average and he's stolen 8 bases in the past 9 games! Don't expect Kemp to steal 50 bases but he could be a 20 SB and 20 HR guy this year with a small chance to become a 30/30 guy down the road.

2. Shaun Marcum SP - Blue Jays
W-L - 4-2 | ERA - 2.59 | Walks- 16 | K- 44 | WHIP - .90
If the Blue Jays can find a way to sneak into the playoffs the trio of Halladay, Burnett and Marcum could make some waves. Shaun has 9 Ks in each of his last two starts with a sexy 1.17 ERA. With a season WHIP of .90 you know Marcum is the real deal and is having himself a breakout season.

3. Ervin Santanna SP - Angels
W-L - 6-0 | ERA - 2.02 | Walks- 9 | K- 38 | WHIP - .88
Ervin Santanna has finally figured out how to pitch on the road and that's made all the difference. The Angels just know pitching and you knew it could only be so long before they fixed Ervin's mechanics and he lived up to his potential. He's coming off a 9K complete game shutout of the Royals on the road. He hasn't let up more than 3 earned runs in any of his 7 starts. The west coast is sporting there own dominant Santanna.

4. Edison Volquez SP - Reds
W-L - 5-1 | ERA - 1.06 | Walks- 24 | K- 52 | WHIP - 1.23
Flat out this kid can pitch. If you haven't heard of Volquez by this point then you're not doing your fantasy baseball homework. He's dominating hitters and has an astounding 29Ks in his last 3 starts! He'll need to cut down on his walks but with a 1.06 ERA and 52 Ks this season I say who really cares about a few walks a game when nobodys hitting him anyway.

5. Josh Hamilton CF - Rangers
AVG - .292 | HR - 7 | RBI - 36 | Runs - 17 | SB - 0
The number #1 pick in the 1999 draft is paying huge dividends for the Texas Rangers this year. Josh Hamilton is an RBI machine right now. He's killing right-handed pitching but his power numbers (1 HR) and average (.257) against southpaws are a bit of a concern. Regardless, it's looking more and more like Josh is going to continue this trend throughout the season and have his breakout year.

Don't be afraid to make moves in your fantasy leagues. Don't fall in love with a player. I've said it before and I'll say it again, fantasy leagues are not won by idle managers. You need to fill the gaps in your team.
