MLB Power Rankings - Week 15 07/07/08

The Rays have pushed themselves into the realm of the elite and they aren't getting it done by chance. Chew on this...The AL East has a + 195 run differential! Every team has scored more runs than they've allowed, and in the era of the unbalanced schedule that means the Rays have had their hands full. I mean compare that to the atrocious first place D-Backs division and its -185 run differential!

1.
Tampa Bay Rays 55-32 (1)
-(6-0) Break up the Rays! Without a doubt they are the story of the year, even if they were to collapse and fade now. But with they're solid starting pitching and young spunky lineup, they look like they've shaped to hang around. Evan Longoria has also emerged as a big-time front runner for rookie of the year.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have sprung upon the NL West with a venomous attack. Their pitching has been beyond reliable and the young hitting has proven both clutch and dependable. SP Doug Davis will be inactive for 4-6 weeks as he recovers from surgery due to Thyroid cancer. His heroic final start in which he gained the victory with his arm and aided with his bat (2-2 1 RBI), should provide motivation for his team to continue their success. Remarkably enough his replacement will be five time Cy Young award winner Randy Johnson. The Unit’s success could very well vault the D-Backs to an even higher level. We’d like to take this time to remind you that Arizona is currently at 15-1 odds to win the World Series.
All that glitters is not gold in the NL as the hot Cincinnati Reds hit sub zero temperatures when they traveled to Pittsburgh. The AL is obviously open for grabs, but none of the favorites are in first place to start the season, and maybe there’s a little more parity in baseball than NFL fans would have you think.
Last weeks power rankings are in bold, while the weekly win/loss record starts each team paragraph.

1.
Arizona Diamondbacks 9-3 (1)
-(5-1) Not only are they off to a great start, but they are 8-1 against division rivals. Look for that trend to continue when they take on the Giants and Padres this week. While your watching make sure to catch a glimpse of Justin Upton (this week he’s 10-21 with 2HR and 8 RBI).

It's still early to make too much of the rankings except a lot of bad teams jumped out of the gates hot, and a lot of good teams jumped out of the gates cold, and the Giants sucked as expected. Last weeks rankings are in parenthesis.

1.
Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 (7)
Chris Young and Justin Upton are carrying the offense. Brandon Webb dominant as ever. Brandon Lyon’s days as closer are numbered.

2.
Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 (15)
Ryan Braun is certainly all that he is cracked up to be, Bill Hall with a career game can take some of the weight off of Prince Fielders 0HR. Eric Gagne needs to be more consistent.
